Abstract
954,694. Universal joints. ARMSTRONG PATENTS CO. Ltd. March 11, 1963 [Dec. 9 1961 ; June 1, 1962], Nos. 44137/61 and 21117/62. Heading F2U. A resilient rotary power transmission device comprises an outer member 10 having equiangularly spaced chordal cylinders 24 from the corresponding ends of which extends a radial slot 20, pistons 26 in the cylinders being urged by pneumatic spring means to engage radial blades 28 rigid with an inner member 12. The inner and outer members have bores for the reception of shafts which may be axially, radially or angularly misaligned. The ends of the cylinders 24 facing in the same direction are joined by internal drillings in the outer member to a common diaphragm chamber 30 and 32 filled with hydraulic fluid; the other side diaphragm chambers being pressurized by air, in chambers 36, 38 through an inlet 44. In modifications individual pneumatic springs act on the pistons which are sealed by rolling diaphragms. The diaphragm may be damped by hydraulic fluid on one side. The piston and pneumatic spring assemblies may be inserted as separate units in the outer member, and may be duplicated for each blade 28.
