Abstract

954,456. Scouring pads. COLGATEPALMOLIVE Ltd. March 15, 1963 [March 16, 1962], No. 10162/62. Heading A4R. [Also in Division B3] A method of making steel wool pads comprises feeding a substantially continuous strip or a number of superposed substantially continuous strips of steel wool between a pair of pressing rolls at least one of which has circumferentially spaced recesses in its surface to produce spaced compressed regions transversely across the strip or strips. A continuous cylindrical wound strip 1 of steel wool is formed by diagonally feeding a web 2 of steel wool, through a soap or synthetic detergent impregnation unit 5, on to a hollow rotating mandrel 3. A web 10 of steel wool, paper or fabric from a bonding, rust-resisting, pH adjusting and/or detergent impregnation unit 11 and dryer 12 is fed through the mandrel 3 to form a core. The strip 1 is drawn between driven rolls 20, which compress the longitudinal edges 30 and then between pocketed driven rolls 25 which compress spaced transverse portions 31 of the strip 1 as well as the edges 30. Inserts 40 on the upper roll 25 have serrated edges which form partial severings across the portions 31, while one insert 40a has a knife edge which severs the strip once every revolution of the rollers 25. The severed ribbons of pads pass on to a belt conveyer 80 and through a drying or cooling tunnel 81 to a packing station where they may be packed concertina fashion in cartons. The impregnation bath 5 may contain a soap made from Palm Oil fatty acids and Palm Kernel/Coconut Oil fatty acids using an alkali mixture of potassium hydroxide and sodium hydroxide in the ratio 8 to 1. The web 10 may comprise a cotton bandage and the bath 11 may contain a sodium silicate solution. The web 2 may be sprayed with a solution having 1 per cent. sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate and 1 per cent. sodium silicate. In another embodiment, Fig. 7, the web is formed from two continuous strips of steel wool 100, 101, sprayed with soap or synthetic detergent from nozzles 116, 117, and a strip 102 or textile or paper passed through an adhesive applying bath 115. Other numbers of strips some or all of steel wool may be used. The centre strip may be a cotton bandage and be impregnated with sodium dodecylbenzene sulphonate and sodium silicate. The central strip may be replaced by two strips of steel wool impregnated with a heavy duty detergent. The central strip may be thick absorbent paper or a thin coated paper impregnated with sodium silicate.
