An automatic machine for feeding and cutting spools 58 of paper into rolls, such as toilet rolls, comprises a band or circular saw 10, a rotatable drum 24 having a number of containers 44 for carrying the spools, means 411 for pushing the spools endwise to a cutting position, and expandable spindles 20 for entering and holding the spools in the cutting position. The drum is supported by shafts 18, 33 mounted in bearing 4, 5 and has flanges 26, 27 to each of which are secured four pairs of straps 28, 30 connected to further flanges 19, 32. Sprockets 29, 35 are mounted between the straps for chains 41 carrying bearers 41<SP>1</SP> for moving the spools endwise, the sprockets 35 being connected by gearing 36, 38 to gears 39 which successively engage a 90 degrees toothed quadrant on a stationary disc 40 during rotation of the drum 24 by a motor 60 to advance each spool in its container 44 to abut the flange 19 as the drum is rotated to bring the spools into engagement with the saw. Each spindle 20 consists of a cylinder 53 and plunger 55 mounted in a sleeve 52 on the flange 19. The cylinders and plungers have cams 21, 22 engaging grooves in a stationary cylinder 23 so that as a spool is advanced to its cutting position, the cylinder and plunger of the associated spindle are moved inside the spool, the plunger then being moved relatively to the cylinder to enable a spring 57 to expand segments 56 and hold the spool while it is cut by the saw. Thereafter, the spindle is retracted so that a severed roll can be discharged by a platform 48 and shoot 61. Spools are successively fed to the drum from a conveyer by brackets 49 on chains 47, 48, the brackets lifting a spool into a container 44 each time an empty support is in its lower position and a pneumatically-operated slide 51 is moved to uncover an opening 62. The spools are retained in the containers by a stationary outer casing 45. The saw and its motor 9 are mounted on a frame supported by pivots 8 on uprights 6, the position of the saw being adjusted by a rod or turnbuckle 11.
