Abstract

952,927. Zirconium and hafnium separation. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. April 17, 1961 [April 19, 1960], No. 13829/61. Drawings to Specification. Heading C1A. Zirconium and hafnium are separated from a material containing them by dissolving the material in sulphuric acid of concentration between 0.1 and 0.4 M, contacting an anionexchange resin in the bisulphate form with the solution formed, developing the resin by displacement using a sulphuric acid solution of a zirconium salt and recovering the hafnium thus displaced, and regenerating the resin by elution with sulphuric acid, at least part of the zirconium free from hafnium being obtained in the eluant. The process is preferably effected in a continuous and countercurrent fashion using a movable mass of resin. The anion exchange resins are advantageously of the strong base type, e.g. those known under the Trade Marks "Dowex 2" " and " Amberlite IRA-410." Specifications 755,601 and 838,262 are referred to.
