Twisted or untwisted yarn as a monofilament or composed of continuous filaments e.g. of cellulose acetate or triacetate,nylon or polyethylene terephthalate, is bulked by passing it through a cylindrical chamber from one end to the other while a stream of heated setting fluid e.g. steam, under pressure is fed tangentially into the chamber in a direction transverse to the direction of yarn travel so as to flow through it as a vertical stream (the direction of which in the vortex may oppose that of the twist in the yarn) to twist the yarn and simultaneously set the twist. The yarn is fed through the point of false-twist and bulked yarn is taken-up at overfeed and draw down ratios both preferably greater than unity. In the finished yarn, which is taken-up with or without twist, individual filaments are helically crimped with the lightness of the helix varying individually along each filament, and the filaments are not in registry so that the yarn resists stretch. Two or more yarns, which may differ in denier and/or direction of twist, may be bulked together to form a composite yarn. The jet shown in Fig. 2 provides off-set yarn inlet and outlet passages 22a and 26 (in a longitudinally adjustable tube 22 and a plug 25) communicating with a chamber 27 to which steam is fed through a bore 32. The jet of Fig. 4 provides axially adjustable, aligned yarn inlet and venturi outlet passageways 41 and 48 meeting in a chamber 49 to which steam is supplied through bores 54 and 35.
