Abstract
947,828. Ultrasonic atomizers. KABUSHIKI KAISHA KOPARU KOKI SEISAKUSHO. March 12, 1962 [March 11, 1961; April 27, 1961 ; July 8, 1961; Sept. 22, 1961], No. 9443/62. Heading B2F. An ultrasonic-wave spray producer comprises in combination, an ultrasonic-wave generator, a vibrating element actuated by the generator, a vibrating plate fixed to the vibrating element over a thin metal plate interposed therebetween so as to effect acoustic matching of the vibrating element and the vibrating plate, a paint supplying means to form a paint film on the working surface of the vibrating plate, a high voltage D.C. supply connected to the vibrating plate and the article being painted, the parts of the combination being so arranged that paint is atomized by the ultrasonic vibrations and projected with the co-operation of the electrostatic field to the article to be painted. In Fig. 2 the vibrating element 7, connected through an isolating transformer 11 to an ultrasonic wave generator 8, is fixed to the thin metal plate 13 and vibrating plate 5. Other embodiments of the vibratory atomizer are described, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), wherein the plate 5 is a circular disc or saucer shaped and wherein a frustoconical horn is fitted between the plate 5 and element 7. In an embodiment, Fig. 1, a chamber 3 of cylinder 2 contains the element 7 while the rear chamber 4 contains the isolating transformer 11 connected to generator 8. The plate 5 is connected to a high voltage source 12. The frequency of oscillation may be 40 kc./s. This may be continuously variable over a frequency range by means of a motor driven tuning condenser VC (Fig. 2), and the oscillation may be intermittently stopped, by motor driven cam operated switch SW which periodically connects the suppressor grid G3 to a negative potential, so allowing the paint film to flow evenly over the plate 5 during cessation of oscillation. The varying frequency also prevents points of high and low density of ultrasonic wave energy on the plate 5 becoming static as with constant frequency operation.
