Abstract

An alkali metal generator, for use within an envelope of a device in which a photo-emissive surface, e.g. of Na, K or Cs, is required to be deposited, e.g. on a base layer of Sb, Ag or other metal, comprises an electrically conducting heating element, a powdered mixture of a reducible alkali metal compound, e.g. chromate or bromide, and a reducing agent, e.g. Al, Si or Ca, and a binder for the mixture, e.g. alkali metal silicate, preferably the alkali metal in above compound, with or without tungsten powder as a moderator. An example gives a heating element made from a coil of tungsten wire wound on to a mandrel, and a powdered mixture of 1 part by weight chromate, e.g. Cs2CrO4 and 1 part by weight Al powder, mixed into a paste with the silicate, preferably of Cs, with or without 12 parts by weight W powder. The coil may be dipped into the paste or the element coated, and the Cs may be released from the generator by passing a current through the coil.
