Abstract

941,893. Mixing fluids in conduits. DOW CHEMICAL CO. April 27, 1961 [May 31, 1960 ; Sept. 9, 1960], No. 15344/61. Heading B1C. In a method and apparatus of the kind wherein flowing media are repeatedly divided into partial streams, which are relatively displaced before reunification so that the surfaces which are re-united are different or are relatively displaced, the shape of each partial stream is altered so that its cross-section is longer and narrower and they are re-united in overlapping relationships ; see Fig. 1 where the stream at 20 comprising three layers A, B, A, is divided at 21 into two partial streams 30, 30a which are displaced at 22, their cross-sections reduced, elongated and overlapped at 23, and re-united into five layers at 24. In Fig. 2 a mixer performing the operation of Fig. 1 four times has baffles 35, 35a which are mirror images of each other (see Figs. 3 and 3a, not shown) enclosed in a conduit 37 formed in the two halves of a housing 36. A plurality of baffles 35 may be placed side by side in a conduit 42 of larger cross-section (see Fig. 9). In Fig. 10 the baffles 47, 48 are shaped to fit a conduit of circular cross-section. Figs. 11 to 15, not shown, depict annular embodiments of the apparatus. Figs. 16 to 18, not shown, depict auxiliary baffles having crossover channels, which are intended to be inserted among the ordinary baffles to invert the stream. i.e. to bring the outer surface to the inside to counteract the effect of peripheral drag. Fig. 21 shows at 120 a stream of two layers a, b, divided at 121 into four partial streams 131, 132, 133, 134 which are displaced at 122, where their cross-sections may be reduced, overlapped at 123 and brought together to form eight layers at 124. Fig. 22 shows a suitable baffle 135 for use with mirror image baffles 135a in a mixer, Fig. 28, for carrying out the operation of Fig. 21 four times. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 900,656.
