Abstract
941,625. Jointing by stamping. BUCHANAN ELECTRICAL PRODUCTS CORPORATION. April 6, 1961 [April 11, 1960], No. 12330/61. Heading B3Q. [Also in Division B4] A deforming tool for making electrical lead connections within a fitting in the form of a metallic sleeve surrounded by insulation comprises a one-piece member 10 provided with a workpiece-receiving bore 30 having a workpiece entry channel communicating therewith, a first workpiece deforming element 40 displaceable from a retracted position adjacent said entry channel through the channel to an advanced portion within the bore, a plurality of auxiliary deforming elements 66, 68 and means for moving the elements from retracted positions adjacent the bore to second positions occupying portions of the bore with consequent deformation of the fitting. The member 10, which is of U-shaped section and provided with a handle 16, has the deforming elements 66, 68 pivotally mounted upon it at 70, 72 respectively, while another handled member 12 is pivotally connected to the member 10 at 14 and carries the deforming element 40. An arm 44 provides a slotted link connected between a drive pin 48 mounted on the member 12 and the elements 66, 68, the element 66 being connected to the arm 44 by a slotted link 54 in the arm and the element 68 by a pin 60. A spring 102 urges the members 10, 12 to the open position shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 illustrates the position of the tool suitable for axial insertion of work into the bore 30, a detent 117 being provided to act with a torsion spring 116 associated with the drive pin 48 to releasably limit movement of the handled member 12 upon opening the tool. If it is necessary for the insertion of work in a direction perpendicular to the axis of the receiving bore 30, the tool may be opened by applying outward pressure on the member 12 sufficient to cause the spring 116 to pass under the detent 117 so that the pin 48 moves to the upper end of its slot as shown in Fig. 3 and drives arm 44 to further retract the elements 66, 68. On closing the tool from this fully-open position the elements 66, 68 will first take up their position on the work and then the pin 48 will move to the opposite end of the slot as shown in Fig. 2 with the spring 116 passing under the detent 117. Further pressure on the tool will cause the elements 40, 66, 68 to advance on to the work with an arcuate wiping action. In order to ensure that once a deformation cycle has been initiated it is carried through to completion, coacting mechanism is provided on the two arms 10, 12 for ensuring that, if the two arms have not been brought together to the requisite extent for a deformation operation, these arms are latched together when next they are retracted.
