A device for use on a typewriter to print special characters not available in the machine comprises a handle 43 and a body part 40, the latter having slidably mounted therein a shaft 55 retracted by a spring 60 and carrying a head 52 with the required character thereon; the body part 40 is slid on to devices fitted to the usual type-bar guide G and positioned as described below so that when a key of the machine is operated, a rounded end (or a cap of soft material on the end) of the shaft 55 is engaged by a type-bar B between the upper and lower case letters and a print of the character on the head 52 is made. In one form, a bracket 11 is attached to the guide 6 to receive the part 40 and consists of two vertical arms 25 attached by looped parts 22 to side members 15 joined by a cross-piece 17. By means of grooves 16 in the members 15, the bracket 11 can be slid on to the prongs G<SP>1</SP> of the guide, a screw on the crosspiece 17 engaging the upper edge of the opening G<SP>11</SP> in the guide to secure the brackets in position. Grooves 45 in the sides of the body engage the arms 25, and a pointed screw 32 adjustably secured to a leaf-spring 28 on one arm 25 and projecting through a slot thereon engages an indentation 46 in one of the grooves 45 to position the part 40 correctly. The looped parts 22 can be bent to adjust the position of the arms 25 both vertically and laterally. Instead of the bracket 11, separate vertical arms 25 may be attached to the prongs G<SP>1</SP>. Other means than those described for holding the bracket 11 on the guide G and for positioning the part 40 on the bracket 11 are described.
