Abstract

935,251. Strain gauges. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Jan. 3, 1961 [Jan. 27, 1960], No. 2946/60. Class 106 (2). A device for measuring strain in a body 4 comprises members 3, 19 welded thereto at distinct points and an arm 8 fixed to member 3 and slidable in member 19. Arm 8 carries staggered knife-edged electrical contacts 25 which engage contacts 33 as body 4 extends. The number of contacts 33, 25 in contact is a measure of the strain. A second arrangement comprising an arm 8<SP>1</SP> and a member 19<SP>1</SP> may be provided to measure strain in a second direction. Arm 8 is adjustably fixed to member 3 so that the gauge may be preset in a desired range.
