Abstract

932,321. Stripping conductors. LUMALAMPEN A.B. Aug. 28, 1959 [Aug. 30, 1958], No. 29492/59. Addition to 931,338. Class 36. [Also in Group XXII] Apparatus for preparing the ends of cable comprises elements which sever the cable, strip the insulation from the severed ends and twist the bared strands of wire, these functions being performed in predetermined sequence controlled by a single member forming part of the apparatus. A gear-wheel 10 carries a fixed pin 7 and another pin 9 which is adjustable in a groove 11. Pin 7 causes one end of a crank 3 to latch into a pawl 6, the other end of the crank carrying a roller 2 which is thus kept out of engagement with a driving roller 1. Rotation of the gear 10 causes pin 9 to release the crank 3 and thus bring the roller 2 into engagement by action of the spring 5. Cable L between the rollers is thus fed through the cutting device 25 until the crank 3 is again latched open by roller 7. The gear 10 is driven through a gear 16 from a worm-gear (20, Fig. 3, not shown) which also drives the roller 1 and carries a pulley from which a drive is taken to the cutting device 25 which is thus continuously rotated, the worm-gear being driven by an electric motor. The cutting device comprises two jaws 28 (Figs. 5 and 6) each carrying a cutter element 30 and pivoted about pivots 29. The outer surfaces of the jaws 28 are shaped so that as rollers 31, carried on a ring 32, are moved clockwise the jaws are enabled to move apart under the action of centrifugal force, whilst as these rollers are moved counter-clockwise they cause the jaws to close until stopped by pins 36. Closure of the jaws results in severance of the cable by the inner cutting edges and cutting of the insulation by the outer edges. The ring 32 is normally held in the clockwise-turned position relative to the driving wheel 33, on which it is mounted, by a spring 34, but operation of a brake arm 51 causes brakes 35 to exert a braking action on ring 32, thus moving the pins 31 counterclockwise to the position shown, to close the cutting jaws. To prevent the cable from turning it is gripped by a collet 37, having a conical portion, in combination with a spring sleeve 38 and compression spring 39; axial movement being effected by a forked arm 40 engaging a collar 41. The cable is gripped on the other side of the cutting head by a pair of jaws 43 which are swung closed by arm 44 moved by arm 46, further movement of these arms causing outward movement of arm 42, against the action of a friction pad, and resulting in axial movement of the jaws 43 to move the severed cable away from the cutting device 25, which movement, coupled with that of the arm 40 results in stripping of the cut insulation from the severed cable ends, whilst the rotation of the cutting element prior to stripping results in twisting of the wire strands. The stripped insulation pieces are captured within a hood 57 and discharged through shoot 59. The forked arm 40, arm 46, and brake arm 51 are respectively pivoted about one of three pivots 56 each of which extends to the rear of the vertical mounting plate and is provided with a cam follower arm to co-operate with a three-part cam which is mounted on the spindle of the gear-wheel 10 and thus determines the timing sequence of the gripping and stripping operations in relation to the cable feed cycle.
