Abstract

Esters of 4-chloro-phenoxyacetic acid with alcohols, including alcohols of the general formula R(OCnH2n)mOH, in which R is hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group of 1-4 carbon atoms and n and m are integers from 1-3, are prepared by reacting the free acid with the alcohol, e.g. butyl "cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark), n-hexyl cellosolve, phenyl cellosolve, 1-butoxyethoxy-2-propanol, n-hexylcarbitol, iso-octyl alcohol or nonyl alcohol.ALSO:A method of inhibiting the growth of bracken in a bracken-infested area comprises applying to said area a composition whose pteridophyticidal ingredient is 4-chloro phenoxy acetic acid or one or more of its salts, esters or alkylsubstituted or unsubstituted amides dissolved or dispersed in or on a diluent or carrier. Specified salts and esters are the salts formed with alkali metals e.g. sodium and potassium, the ammonium salt, salts formed with alkanolamines of 2-9 C and alkylamines of 1-12 C and esters formed with, methyl, ethyl, propyl, isopropyl, butyl, isobutyl, hexyl, amyl, nonyl, iso - octyl alcohols, butoxy - ethoxy - 2 - propanol, n - hexyl "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark), n-hexyl carbitol, phenyl cellosolve and alcohols of the formula R1(OCnH2n)m OH in which R1 is hydrogen or a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group containing 1-4 c and n and m are integers from 1-3 e.g. glycol, polyethylene glycols, polypropylene glycols, 2-butoxy ethanol, and methyl and ethyl cellosolves and carbitols. Specified carriers are oleaginous vehicles e.g. aromatic naphthas, 555 oil, kerosenes, light summer oils, xylenes and fuel oils with or without cosolvents e.g. butyl cellosolve and dimethyl sulphoxide which may be emulsified or dispersed in water with or without the aid of surface active agents e.g. polyoxyethylene sorbitol tall oil condensates; the reaction product of fatty acids with alcohols or ether alcohols with 2-6 hydroxy groups in the molecule; phthalic coconut oil fatty acid resin; alkyl, aryl sulphonates; polyoxyethylene sorbitan ester of mixed fatty acids and resin acids; "Atlox" (Registered Trade Mark) 3387 and 3396; polyethylene glycol ester of oleic acid; calcium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, ethylene oxide condensates, "Span" (Registered Trade Mark) and "Texofor" (Registered Trade Mark). The emulsions may be oil in water or water in oil emulsions. The composition may also contain extenders, penetrants and sequestrants e.g. water-soluble salts of citric acid and ethylene diamine tetra-acetic acid. The invention also relates to a pteridophyticidal composition containing 4-chlorophenoxy-acetic technical ester containing 7% free acid, isooctyl, nonyl or butoxyethanol ester dispersed or dissolved in a diluent or carrier. The composition containing the butoxyethanol ester may contain 2,4-D or 2,4,5-T. Specification 807,694 is referred to.
