[Also in Group XXXV] A machine for the longitudinal splitting of carpet as it is drawn from a roll 24 disposed on a stand 23 comprises means 32 for sensing a side edge of the carpet as it is drawn from the roll and laterally displacing the stand so as to bring the carpet into the correct position relatively to a longitudinal datum, laterally-displaceable cutters 17 consisting of a number of blades adapted to be brought into cutting operation selectively according to the widths to be cut, and means 18 for sensing the side edge of the carpet and thereby controlling the lateral position of the cutters in relation to the stand. The stand 23 comprises two end carriages connected together by a transverse spindle which receives a roll of carpet and is arranged to be adjusted transversely of the machine by its screw-threaded engagement with a nut driven by a motor controlled by the feeler switch 32 co-operating with one edge of the carpet as it is drawn over a table 1. The cutter is mounted on a transversely movable frame 3 which is interposed in a gap in the table and arranged to be transversely adjusted by screw-and-nut means driven by a motor controlled by sensing feelers 18 disposed at each side of the carpet. Mounted on the frame is a transverse spindle carrying a series of short steel rollers 9 and coacting with each roller in superposed relation is a freely-rotatable cutting disc 17 on a pivoted arm 12 adapted to be swung to and from the roller 9 by an hydraulic cylinder 15. The carpet is cut into appropriate widths depending upon which cutters are lowered into operative position. The carpet is kept taut in the cutting zone by driven rollers 20, 21, of which the rollers 21 are driven at faster speed. The slit carpet is wound at 35 after being cut-off by a motor-driven cutter 34.
