Abstract

922,491. Thermistors. COMPAGNIE GENERALE DE TELEGRAPHIE SANS FIL. March 24, 1960 [April 3, 1959], No. 10515/60. Class 37. A thermistor material comprises oxides of manganese and nickel and an amount of lead oxide equal to from 0.1 to 10% by weight of all the other constituents combined. A typical material is made by grinding together in an aqueous medium weighed amounts of oxides of manganese, nickel, and perhaps oxides of cobalt and/or copper, with lead oxide or one or more lead salts capable of calcining to the oxide, drying, sieving, mixing with a 10% solution of polyvinyl alcohol, sieving, moulding under pressure and calcining and fritting at 1260‹ C. Alternatively the oxides may be prefritted by heating at 600-1200‹ C. before the lead oxide is added. The presence of the lead oxide in the composition in addition to reducing the resistivity of the product without significantly affecting its temperature coefficient and reducing the effect of variations in the fritting temperature, results in a less porous body. Examples of specific compositions are given.
