Abstract
917,163. Reciprocating pumps. PATENTUND VERWALTUNGSA.G. Dec. 14, 1960 [Dec. 19, 1959], No. 43050/60. Class 102(1). [Also in Group XXIX] The inlet of a suction pipe, for use in an oil tank having a layer of water, or other impurity of greater density than the oil, beneath the oil, is carried by a float the arrangement being such that when the float is supported by the oil, the oil can enter the pipe, but when supported by the water or impurity the water or impurity cannot enter the pipe. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the pipe inlet 6 is mounted on a float 1 in a position such that when the float is on oil the inlet is immersed and when on water the inlet is above the surface. The initial depth of immersion of the float is produced by a removable weight 2 or a quantity of a suitable liquid within the float. The float is guided by a rod 8. In another embodiment, Fig. 2, an upper float portion 9 supports the pipe and a lower float portion 10 acts to close the inlet by the engagement of surfaces 12 and 15 when the float portion 10 reaches the water layer. Float portion 10 is guided by a rod 13 passing through float portion 9.
