Articles are transferred from a feeding conveyer to a receiving conveyer at an angle thereto by means of a transfer conveyer, aligned with either the feeding conveyer or the receiving conveyer and supported on a frame which is pivotable about a horizontal axis so that raising or lowering of the transfer conveyer permits completion of the transfer of articles to the receiving conveyer. As shown, Fig. 1, strapped groups 1 of baking tins are transferred from a conveyer 2 to a conveyer 4, comprising spaced endless bands 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, by means of a transfer conveyer 5 which is aligned with the conveyer 2 and comprises endless chains 18, Fig. 2, mounted on a frame 17 pivoted at one end on a shaft 15 about an axis 13 and supported at the other end by means of an hydraulic or pneumatic ram 31, 32 or a solenoid device. Idler sprockets 22, 23, 24 deflect the upper runs of the chains 18 beneath the upper run of the band 11 by an amount sufficient to permit raising movement of the conveyer 5 about the axis 13 to carry an article thereon clear of the runs 11, 11<SP>1</SP>. In operation, an article passing from the conveyer 2 on to the conveyer 5, which is raised clear of the bands 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, actuates a switch means 35 to raise stops 7 to stop ensuing articles and, when positioned abreast both runs 11, 11<SP>1</SP>, actuates switch means 36 to lower the ram 31, 32, thereby being deposited on the runs 11, 11<SP>1</SP>. The articles are transferred from the conveyer 4 to a conveyer 3 by means of a similar transfer conveyer 6 aligned with the conveyer 3. The Specification describes how the invention can be applied to a bakery plant in which a stream of empty bread tins carried on one conveyer is divided into two conveyer lines by means of transfer conveyers of the type described above.
