In a multi-stage electrostatic precipitator the ionization zone 1 is followed by at least two collecting zones 2, 3, each of which is constituted by an assembly of plates, and the spacing between plates of a preceding assembly 2 is greater than that between the plates of a subsequent assembly 3. In a modification, the plates of assembly 2 form extensions of certain plates, e.g. every third plate, of the assembly 3. Each collecting zone may be preceded by an ionization zone.
