For coding amplitude-modulated pulses in a cyclic permuted binary code, the amplitudemodulated pulses, having a duration less than one digit interval, are supplied via a terminal 1 to an OR gate 2 and a standard voltage e 0 whose amplitude is half the possible maximum signal amplitude is subtracted at 6. The output pulse of the subtractor 6 is a positive pulse if the input pulse amplitude is greater than e 0 and is a negative pulse when the input is less than e 0 , and a polarity discriminator 5 transmits a code pulse to the output 7 only when the output of the subtractor 6 is positive. A polarity inverter 8 is controlled by the polarity discriminator 5 to reverse the polarity of the pulse from 6 when it is negative and pass it unchanged if it is positive and the resulting positive pulses are doubled in amplitude at 4 and returned via a delay line 3, having a delay of one digit interval, to the input circuit 2. Each cycle produces a corresponding digit at the output and the cycle is repeated n times for an n digit code.
