Abstract

909,022. Refrigerating. CARRIER ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Aug. 15, 1961 [Sept. 9, 1960], No. 31212/60. Class 29. A continuous cycle absorbtion system using water as the refrigerant and lithium bromide solution as the desorbent, Fig. 2, comprises a condenser/generator unit 30, an evaporator/absorber unit 54, 55, an evaporator water pump 57, two solution pumps 58 and 59, and a calorifier 46 receiving a solution weak in absorbing powers from a heat exchanger 56. Condenser/generator unit, Fig. 1, comprises a vertical cylindrical shell 27 closed at the top and bottom by end plates 28 and 29. The generator includes a spray device 31 adapted to spray a weak solution into the shell 27, and a strong solution outlet sump 34. The weak solution is previously heated in the calorifier 46. The condenser comprises a bank of U-shaped tubes 37 supported in vertical spaced side-byaide relation in the upper part of the shell 27, with the curved portions of the tubes disposed at the lower end of the bank. A condensing fluid, such as water, passes through the tubes. Below the condenser tubes is located a draining means 44 adapted to receive condensate falling from the condenser tubes and to pass it to an outlet 45. Evaporator/absorber unit, Fig. 3, comprises an evaporator 54 and an absorber 55 both enclosed in a vertical cylinder 1 having a diametrical wall 2 dividing the cylinder into an evaporator enclosure 3 and an absorber enclosure 4, each containing a bank of tubes 6, 7, supported in vertical spaced side-by-side relation. Each bank of tubes extends out of its appropriate enclosure and through a liquid receiving compartment 10 or 11. The compartment 10 receives the evaporator water and the compartment 11 receives the strong solution. A fluid to be cooled passes through the tubes 6 and a cooling fluid, such as water, passes through the tubes 7. At the bottom of each liquid compartment are apertures 18 closely surrounding the tubes and these permit the appropriate liquid to flow down the outside of the tubes as a thin film. Evaporator water evaporates in the enclosure 3, and passes through a liquid eliminator 5 into the enclosure 4 where it is absorbed by the strong solution. A drainage box 22 of the evaporator serves to receive the evaporator water which is not evaporated from the surface of the tubes 6, and also to receive condensate from the condenser outlet 45. A drainage box 23 receives the weak solution from the absorber. The evaporator/absorber unit described above forms the disclosure and claims of Specification 909,021.
