[Also in Group XXXIV] A transfer roller system comprises two rollers driven to rotate at different peripheral speeds and a transfer roller relatively movable between the said two rollers to engage the peripheries respectively at different times, wherein the transfer roller comprises a number of freely rotatable sections and means to move the sections into co-operation respectively with the said two rollers in different phase relationships. The roller comprises a plurality of disc-like sections, each comprising an outer ring 1, Fig. 5, freely rotatable on a ball or roller bearing 3 on an inner ring 4. The ring 4 is mounted by means of an eccentric hexagonal opening on a hexagonal shaft 5, and the rings are arranged with at least some out of phase with others. On rotation of the shaft, at any one moment, one or more sections will contact the ink supply roller, one or more will contact the receiving or distributing roller, and one or more will be out of contact'with both the other rollers. In another form, Fig. 3, the shaft and ring opening are circular, and the ring opening is formed with six semi-circular recesses 6, any one of which can fit on to a key 7 secured to the shaft. All the recesses are offset from the line through the points of greatest and least eccentricity of the ring 4, thus allowing twelve positions of the ring.
