Abstract

907,529. Coating apparatus. SUCKER G.m.b.H. GEB. Dec. 19, 1958 [Dec. 23, 1957; July 5, 1958; July 12, 1958], No. 41043/58. Classes 96 and 140. [Also in Group IX] In a method of impregnating fibrous web material the said material is conveyed through a bath of the impregnating medium and there are simultaneously measured (i) the length of the travelling material and (ii) the absorption of the impregnating medium, and at intervals the ratio of the measured values to one another is ascertained and the said ratio is employed to regulate the quantity of absorbed medium per unit length of material. Specified impregnating processes comprise the sizing of groups of threads, the dyeing of textiles and the sizing of paper webs. As shown in Fig. 1, fibrous material-comprising a group of warp threads F to be sized-is guided from a warp beam 1, through a size box 2, thence between squeezing rollers 3 and 4, through drying chamber 5 and finally wound on winding-beam 7 by way of draw-off rollers 6a, 6b and 6c. Connected to the shaft of roller 6a is length meter 8 which may be brought into operation by electricallyoperated clutch 9. Container 23 is connected to size-box 2 by overflow 22. Pump 21 cycles size from container 23 to size-box 2. Size is supplied from a source not shown, through pipe 11 controlled by shut-off valve 12, electrically operated. In container 23 are two sensing electrodes 24 and 25 adapted to ascertain whether they are contacted by liquid or not. Rollers 3 and 6b are driven by motor 14 by gearing not shown. Controller 18 governs the measuring and regulating elements of the apparatus. In operation the size-box 2 and container 23 are first charged with size through pipe 11. Motor 14 is started and the beam of threads F is drawn through the size whose level starts to fall. When the level in container 23 falls immediately below member 24 a control signal via controller 18 operates clutch 9 to connect up meter 8 to shaft 6a. When the level drops below member 25 a further control signal via controller 18 releases clutch 9 and disconnects the meter 8 and also opens valve 12 to admit a fresh charge of size. When the size level reaches member 24 a control signal via controller 18 closes valve 12 and the cycle recommences. The size absorption may be ascertained from the difference in level between members 24 and 25 and the length of material which has travelled through the apparatus as recorded by meter 8. The quotient of these two valves may be indicated at controller 18 and may be used for regulating the size absorption by varying the squeezing pressure between rollers 3 and 4 by means of motor 133 (Fig. 3, not shown), which is controlled by controller 18. Specifications 858,668 and 886,236 are referred to.
