A sharpener for knives and other edge tools comprises a rotary power-driven sharpening stone mounted above a water bath formed by two interconnected annular chambers, a rotary impeller driven by the driving of the stone and working within one chamber to expel water from the bath, a conduit leading from this chamber to receive water expelled by the impeller and to discharge this water on to the face of the stone and means for ensuring that this water drains back into the other annular chamber. A sharpening stone 4 is secured to the shaft 3 of a motor 1 and is partly enclosed by a cover 9 mounted for rotation within a ring 10 supported by a mounting 11 fixed to a casing 2 and enabling the cover 9 to be lowered to compensate for wear on the stone. The cover comprises a wall 12 and a top fin having two segmented parts 13, 14 at different angles to the horizontal and separated by a circular table 15. The upper part of the casing 2 encloses a water-bath divided into outer and inner troughs 19, 20 by a wall 21, the troughs communicating through holes 22 in the wall 21. An impeller 23 secured to the shaft 3 rotates in the trough 20, expelling water through a port 26 and sleeve 27 connected by flexible tubing to a rigid tube 28 held by a clamp 29 mounted on the wall 21. The tube 28 may be swivelled in the clamp so that its mouth 31 lies directly above one or other of holes 30 in the parts 13, 14. The water returns to the trough 19 in which most of the particles settle.
