Abstract

903,111. Road surfacing machines. JOHNSTON BROS. (CONTRACTORS) Ltd., and BONE, A. B. April 12, 1960 [Jan. 12, 1959], No. 39567/58. Class 107. A machine for surfacing concrete roads of various widths comprises a wheeled support frame which runs on forms disposed on opposite sides of the road, a reciprocating smoothing element and brush, both extending transversely of the machine, a grooving roller which can be driven transversely of the machine and means for spraying the road surface with a liquid compound. The support frame, formed of end members 10a, 10b and cross-members 11a, 11b, 12a, 12b, and 13a, 13b, is supported on wheels 14. One pair of wheels on one side of the frame may be adjusted relative to the frame to permit operation on roads of various widths. The smoothing element, Fig. 4, includes a box structure formed by channel members 23 and plates 24 which extends between end rollers 25 and an endless belt 21 which runs over the rollers and presents a smooth lower run which engages the concrete surface. The box structure is extendable and means are provided for tensioning the belt and for moving a fresh section of the belt into the lower run position. The element is supported in each side of the machine by yokes 37 which engage rollers 38 journalled in height adjusting arrangements 40, 41, 42. The brush includes a number of brush elements arranged side by side which are secured to a pair of transversely extending channel members 45, these are supported on each side of the machine by rollers 46 which are carried by yokes attached to a height adjusting arrangement operated by handles 8. The smoothing element and brush arrangement are reciprocated by connecting-rods 61 and 60 respectively connected to cranks 57 and 56 driven by motor 50. The grooving roller 65 is formed with a cutting peripheral flange 66 and is supported on a carriage running on rollers 71 which engage cross-members 18a, 18b. A sprocket 73 secured to the roller axle engages a chain 74 fixed transversely of the frame whereby as the carriage is moved the roller is rotated. The roller is driven by two endless chains 75 which engage the carriage and run over pairs of sprockets 76 disposed on either side of the machine. One pair of sprockets is driven from motor 50. The height of the roller may be adjusted by screw jacks 78 which raise the cross-members 18a, 18b. The traverse of the roller may be adjusted by altering the position of the undriven pair of sprockets relative to the frame and altering the chain length. The spraying fluid is contained in tank 84 and is supplied by cock 85 to a telescopic spraying bar 87.
