Abstract

902,391. Fluid-pressure brakes. DUNLOP RUBBER CO. Ltd. Dec. 18, 1958 [Jan. 21, 1958], No. 1952/58. Class 103 (1). A master cylinder comprises a cylinder 1 movable axially in either of two opposite directions, and a pair of spaced pistons 14, 15, either of which is movable by the cylinder towards the other piston to pressurize fluid therebetween on either direction of movement of the cylinder. The cylinder 1, having inlets 2, 4 and outlet 3, is formed with spaced webs 5 through which pass guiderods 8 fixed at one end to fixed member 9 and at the other end to a fixed resilient bush 13. The web nearest member 9 has a bored lug 6 containing pin 10 carrying levers 11 to which an actuating member, e.g. a band-brake, is fixed. The pistons 14, 15 are each formed with a nose 21 and an extension 29 abutting member 9 and bush 13 in the normal position, the pistons being retained in cylinder 1 by rings 16 and dustexcluding gaiters 18 protect the ends of the cylinder. One end 28 of a rod 27 is retained in bore 22 in piston 14 by a cup 24 and the other end carries valve member 30 and is retained adjacent a bore 23 in piston 15 by a cup 31, the cups and pistons being separated by a spring 25 and bore 23 being connected to inlet port 4 via passage 26 and the piston waist. In operation, movement of levers 11 to the right results in piston 15 being fixed and piston 14 being carried by cylinder 1 to the right, the rod 27 and valve 30 closing bore 23, the spring 25 being compressed and fluid expelled from cylinder 1 via port 3 to the brakes. Movement of levers 11 to the left results in piston 14 being fixed and piston 15 moving with the cylinder 1. The spring 25 returns the pistons and cylinder to the normal position on brake release, the valve 30 being moved from bore 23. Im Figs. 4-6, not shown, a similar master cylinder is actuated by a band-brake and the outlet 4 is connected to a disc brake, the ends of the pistons being connected to external return-springs. In a further embodiment in the Provisional Specification, the master cylinder has a single piston with a lost-motion connection between the piston and cylinder and between the piston and a fixed member, these lost-motion connections permitting only the piston or cylinder to be moved according to the direction of movement of the actuating member. The master cylinder is returned to its normal position by admitting pneumatic pressure to a ram or by springs.
