Abstract

902,229. Welding by fusion. YATES PLANT Ltd. Aug. 24, 1960 [Sept. 1, 1959], No. 29742/59. Class 83 (4). A horizontal cantilever boom 5 carrying an arc welding head 6 is supported by rollers 9 journalled in a carrier 2 and is moved axially by friction drive from at least one of the rollers 9. The carrier 2 is counter-weighted and movable vertically between uprights 1 on rollers 3 and 4, the rollers 4 being grooved and engaging rails 4<SP>1</SP> on the uprights 1. Each roller 9 has a cast-iron core 11 and a pair of rubber tyres 10, the clearance between the boom 5 and the core 11 being taken up only under maximum loading. The boom 5 is located by ball casters 17. Chains 14 interconnect the upper and the lower pairs of rollers 9. A separate electric motor 15 is provided to drive each chain 14, and the motors are electrically interconnected. In a modification only two rollers 9 at one end of the carriage are driven and the other two rollers are not provided with tyres. It is also stated that hard rimmed rollers on spring-mounted axles may be used. The axes of the rollers 9 may be inclined or vertical.
