Abstract

901,113. Boots &c. LUNKENHEIMER, E. May 11, 1960 [May 15, 1959], No. 16608/60. Class 17 (2). A foot-supporting insole comprises a porous, flexible insert 2, Fig. 1, containing a fluid medium and surrounded by an air-impermeable elastic envelope 1 of thermoplastic material. The insert 2 is stuck or welded to the envelope 1 and is supplied with fluid through a valve 3. A welded seam 4 may be incorporated to produce a particular path of flow 5 for the fluid. Perforations 6, Fig. 4, may be made in the insert material to regulate the rate of circulation of the fluid. For high-heeled shoes the insole is divided behind the ball portion by two transverse, welded seams 7, separated by a channel 8, so that each insole half operates independently. A fluid-supply valve 11, closed by a flexible pin 12, is incorporated in the channel 8 and seams 7 have openings 9 and 10 through which fluid passes into the two halves of the insole. The insole may extend to the ball of the foot, as shown, or may extend over the full length of the foot. Insert 2, 2a is of porous rubber, synthetic material or light foam material based on polyurethane. The fluid medium may be a gas or a liquid, e.g. air, water or oil, and may be an insulant or have heat or cold producing properties.
