Abstract

898,572. Screwing-up pipes. DOWTY ROTOL Ltd. June 24, 1960 [June 24, 1959], No. 21708/59. Class 83 (3). [Also in Group XXIV] A vertical pipe 14 in an earth-drilling installation is engaged and supported by three friction rollers 11, 13, 13 each of which comprises a stack of dished resilient metal washers 26, Fig. 2, spaced by washers 27 of rubber or the like. The washers 26 engage splines on a shaft 15, and are clamped against an abutment (not shown) thereon by a threaded ring 29. The rollers 13 are pressed against the pipe 14 by hydraulic jacks 21, 23 while the driving roller 11 spins the pipe 14 on to or off the string of drill pipe. The edges of the dished washers yield to provide an adequate friction surface to support the weight of the pipe.
