894,535. Packaging - machines. FMC CORPORATION. May 26, 1959 [June 2, 1958], No. 17879/59. Class 94(1). Articles such as cheese and sliced meat, are sealed in individual packages formed from a longitudinally folded sheet of impervious material from which the air has been removed and replaced by an inert gas. The sheet of material 14 from a roll 16 is fed to an inverted channel-shaped former 18 and the articles 20 are also fed to this former so that in entering the former the articles are wrapped in the material 14. The former contains means for sealing the material longitudinally to form a tube containing the articles 20. Driven belts 34 at each side of the exit end of the former 18 press the material against each article and advance the wrapped article to a pair of rolls 48 which seal and sever the material transversely between each article. A tube 60 passes from a manifold 62, through the former and ends in a head 68 adjacent the rolls 48 and delivers nitrogen to the interior of the wrapping in the direction of the open end of the wrapping, i.e. towards the former 18, at a temperature the same as, or slightly above, atmospheric temperature. The gas may alternatively be considerably above the temperature of the atmosphere so that on cooling the wrapper contracts around the shape of the article. Rollers 90, 91 press the wrapping on to the top of the articles and cause the nitrogen to pass beneath the articles at these locations and obstructions 104 in the base 30 of the wrapping machine cause the nitrogen to pass over the top of the articles thereby ensuring complete absence of air in the package. The nitrogen is supplied from an air bottle 84, passes through a pressure reducing valve 72 and then to a heat exchanger 74 through which hot water circulates. In an alternative construction the tube 60 and head 68 are replaced by several tubes directed at their open ends towards the rolls 48, 49. The tube may be sealed transversely and longitudinally by heat sealing means. Specification 791,425 is referred to.
