Abstract

Chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons are prepared by reacting at elevated temperature in the gaseous state, a C1-4 aliphatic hydrocarbon and/or a partially chlorinated derivative thereof, with hydrogen chloride and/or elemental chlorine and an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a metal halide catalyst, said catalyst comprising a mixture of carrier particles impregnated with metal halides and carrier particles not so impregnated in a volumetric ratio of 1 part active catalyst particles to from 1 to 3 parts of inactive particles. The catalyst particles preferably have a longest dimension of not more than 2 inches (preferably spherical) and are preferably used in a tubular reactor (preferably 1/4 inch to 4 inches internal diameter), each particle preferably having a total volume equal to that of a sphere having a diameter from 1/5 to 1/7 the diameter of the reactor. Preferred reaction temperatures are 325 DEG C.-700 DEG C. The reactor may be surrounded by a jacket containing a heat exchange medium, e.g. a molten mixture of KNO3, NaNO3 and NaNO2, the catalyst temperature being preferably maintained at 30 DEG C. to 375 DEG C. above that of the heat exchange medium. Residence times may be 0.2 to 10 seconds. The oxygen-containing gas may be oxygen alone, air, oxygen enriched air, air and an inert gas or air, oxygen and an inert gas. Preferably enough oxygen is used to ensure oxidation of the chlorinating medium and still provide some unreacted oxygen in the exit gas. Non-chlorinated and partially chlorinated products may be recycled. The substances chlorinated may belong to the paraffinic, olefinic or acetylenic series. The metal halide catalyst is preferably derived from a metal of variable valency, e.g. Cu, Cr or Fe; other metal halides, e.g. of Na or K, may be present. In examples, CCl4, CH3Cl, CH2Cl2 and CHCl3 are prepared from methane. Specification 894,137 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 853,754.
