Abstract
The invention comprises: compounds of the general formula <FORM:0892117/IV (b)/1> (where R1 represents a m- or p-guanidinophenyl-diazoamino or a m- or p-guanidinoiminomethyl-phenyldiazoamino group, R2 an aryl group, R3 a C1-6 alkyl group and Y- an anion) and their acid addition salts; the preparation thereof by diazotizing m- or p-aminophenylguanidine or m- or p-aminobenzylidineaminoguanidine and coupling with an equimolecular proportion of a phenanthridinium salt of the general formula <FORM:0892117/IV (b)/2> and pharmaceutical compositions containing the products (see Group VI). The compounds can also be made by diazotizing the 7-amino group of a compound of the second general formula above and coupling with m- or p-aminophenyl-guanidine or m- or p-aminobenzyl?deneamino-guanidine. According to the Provisional Specification, R5 may also represent a substituted aryl group (e.g. p-aminophenyl or p-nitrophenyl). p-Aminobenzylideneaminoguanidine is prepared by acid hydrolysis of the corresponding p-acetamido compound, and is isolated as its bicarbonate. m-Aminobenzylideneaminoguanidine (isolated as its dihydrochloride) is prepared by reduction of the corresponding m-nitro compound, itself prepared from m-nitrobenzaldehyde and aminoguanidine bicarbonate.ALSO:Pharmaceutical compositions, active against blood parasites, comprise, in association with a pharmaceutical carrier, at least one phenanthridinium salt of the general formula <FORM:0892117/VI/1> wherein R1 represents a m- or p-guanidinophenyldiazoamino or a m- or p-guanidinoiminomethylphenyldiazoamino group, R2 an aryl group, R3 a C1-6 alkyl group and Y- an anion (e.g. a chloride, bromide, embonate or suramin ion), or an acid addition salt (e.g. hydrohalide, phosphate, nitrate, sulphate, maleate, fumarate, citrate, tartrate, methanesulphonate or ethanedisulphonate) thereof. They may take the form of solutions, suspensions or emulsions (which may be sterilized and may contain wetting, emulsifying or dispersing agents), tablets, pills, dispersible powders, granules, syrups, elixirs and capsules. According to the Provisional Specification, R2 may also represent a substituted aryl group.
