890,839. Valves. ROBERTSHAW-FULTON CONTROLS CO. July 7, 1958, No. 21716/58 Class 135. A thermostatically-operated valve for an engine cooling system comprises a sleeve-type valve member 78 actuated by a wax-fusion type thermostat 38, carried by a perforated member or spider 22. The member 22 also provides the valve seat 26. The valve member 78 is open at its lower end and is provided at its upper end with a plurality of sector-shaped ports 82, which define a number of inwardly-extending arms 84 terminating in a centrally-disposed hub 86 having an aperture 88 extending therethrough. The thermostat 38 is surrounded by a close-fitting sleeve 46 loaded against the thermostat piston 45 by a spring 64. The sleeve is also provided with a stem 54 threaded at 66 to receive an adjustable member 68, the underside of which is abutted by the hub 86 which is retained in engagement therewith by a spring 90. When the coolant temperature is low the valve member 78 is in the position shown and fluid flows through the ports 82 to the main conduit 18. With an increase in temperature the piston 45 is forced upwards by the thermostat and causes the closure member 78 to move progressively away from its seat 26 to permit fluid to flow through the conduit 16. In its uppermost position the valve member seats on the conduit wall 92 and completely cuts off flow through the main conduit 18. The temperature at which the valve member commences to move away from its seat is selected by rotation of the member 68, which varies the loading of the spring 64. Due to the open cylindrical shape of the valve member it is not affected by pressure of the fluid controlled by the valve.
