Abstract

888,071. Hydraulic shock absorbers; adjusting body height. MILLY, L. C. E. Jan. 2, 1959, No. 176/59. Classes 108(2) and 108(3). In a combined shock absorbing and suspension device for road vehicles, a double acting piston and cylinder type, shock absorber has a spring-loaded compensating piston 5, which has a one-way valve 6. In operation, when the piston moves, the valves carried in the piston open before the compensating piston 5 is lifted from its seat 4. A helical spring 16 is mounted between end plates 2, 9. The spring 16 is associated with a flexible rubber-like enclosure 17, which may contain gas under pressure as described in Specification 821,230. The device is selflevelling, air being pumped into the enclosure 17 by a pump comprising a tubular socket 18, integral with the lower end plate 9, which slides on the damper body 1. Air is drawn into the pump through an orifice 29 and a valve 19, and pushed into the enclosure 17 through a valve 27. In operation, if the ground clearance is below the desired amount, springs 22, 23, which abut an end 24 of a distributer 20 bring about a downward displacement of the distributer 20. Consequently, an orifice 26 sealed by the valve 27 will move into a position opposite a callibrated orifice 28 of the pump body 18. From this moment, air drawn into the pump by suction will be compressed into the enclosure 17 through the valve 27. Conversely, if the mean equilibrium height is displaced upwards, a heel 30 of the distributer 20 will raise a valve 31 and bring about a fall in pressure due to the escape of air through an aperture 32. The movements of the distributer 20 may be damped by a hydraulic dashpot instead of frictionally as shown. Compressed air may be supplied to the enclosure 17 from a separate source outside the device through suitable levelling valves. All the suspension devices in a road vehicle may be supplied from the same source of compressed air.
