Abstract

Tropylium salts which may be substituted, are obtained by contacting a cycloheptatriene, containing not more than one substituent on the methylene group, with an oxidising agent in an acid medium. The cycloheptatriene may be unsubstituted or contain alkyl groups, halogen atoms, e.g. chlorine, or may be a benzo-derivative; preferably the by-product from the formation of bicycloheptadiene from cyclopentadiene and acetylene is used, this may contain toluene and further toluene may be added as a diluent. The acid medium is preferably anhydrous and may be glacial acetic, dichloro-acetic or trichloroacetic acid or mixtures thereof. Preferably an acid is also present which yields an insoluble tropylium salt, e.g. perchloric acid or hydrogen boron tetrafluoride, the cycloheptatriene being in excess of such acid by up to 10 equivalents. The oxidising agent is preferably oxygen or air at an oxygen partial pressure of 0.2-20 atmospheres, or may be peracetic acid, pertrichloracetic acid, pertrifluoracetic acid, benzoquinone chloramid or duroquinone. The temperature may be 0 DEG C.-100 DEG C. Specification 701,211 is referred to.
