Abstract

885,026. Electric copying machines. CANADIAN WESTINGHOUSE CO. Ltd. June 27, 1958 [July 18, 1957], No. 20693/58. Class 38 (6). [Also in Group XL (b)] In a line tracing system the scanning axis of a photo-electric arrangement intersects a plane on which is formed an image of the line to be followed, the photo-electric signals operate on a control system to maintain the scanning axis in a position transverse to and bisected by the line image. A line drawing 20 is illuminated by lamps 18 and an image thereof is produced on the ground glass disc 23 and scanned by a photo-cell 24 which is supported by a beam 25 suspended by a flat spring 26 within the scanning head 8. A permanent magnet 27 attached to the beam co-operates with an electromagnet 28 supplied at mains frequency resulting in a swing of the beam across the disc 23 twice each supply frequency cycle. When the scanning axis is correctly positioned with respect to the line image the frequency of the output signal from the cell is twice the supply frequency and when the axis deviates from this position the cell signal includes a component at the supply frequency which is selected and amplified. The amplified signal is applied to one phase of a twophase servomotor 38, the other phase of the motor is supplied from the mains supply and the motor drives a gear chain 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16 and 17 to guide the shaft 36 supporting the drive wheel 42 and the scanning head in a direction which brings the scanning axis to its correct position. The amount by which the head is turned and the direction of turning are controlled respectively by the amplitude of the selected signal and its phase with respect to the supply frequency. A tachometer 39 produces a signal which varies the gain of the amplifier in inverse relationship to the servomotor speed, this damps the movement of the arrangement and prevents overshoot. The assembly is driven by a motor 37 coupled to the wheel 42. In a second arrangement, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the swinging photo-cell is replaced by two fixed cells which are alternately energized at mains frequency.
