Abstract
Pure acetaldehyde is prepared from a mixture containing acetaldehyde, alcohol, formals, olefine oxides and water, such as a product obtained by the partial oxidation of gaseous hydrocarbons from which formaldehyde has been removed, by contacting the mixture with a cation-exchange resin at a temperature of from 66 DEG C. to 110 DEG C., and separating the acetaldehyde. The olefine oxides are converted to the corresponding glycols by the treatment. The gaseous products derived from the oxidation of ethane, propane, and butane or mixtures thereof in a continuous process with recycling, and from which formaldehyde is removed by washing with water, are passed through a bed of cation-exchange resin having acidic components such as sulphonic, carboxylic, phosphonic, phosphorous and phenolic groups, e.g., sulphonated cross-linked polystyrene, phenol-formaldehyde groups with sulphonic groups, styrene-divinyl benzene copolymers with maleic anhydride which is hydrolysed, and sulphonated bituminous coal, and the olefine oxides are hydrolysed. The product is then fractionated to yield pure acetaldehyde. In an example acetaldehyde is obtained from the product of a partial oxidation of propane which is treated with sulphonated polystyrene.
