Abstract

882,605. Pipe joints. WHYTE, J. C. Dec. 13, 1957 [Dec. 13, 1956], No. 38048/56. Class 99(1). [Also in Group XIX] A coupling connecting a pressure gauge (not shown) to the cylinder 23 of an internal combustion engine in place of a fuel injection nozzle comprises a probe 12 arranged to be inserted in a hole in the wall of the cylinder, a non-return valve 13 to allow gas to flow outwards only, a tubular adaptor 14 attached to the probe 12 and registrable against an internal shoulder 24 in the hole, a bridge member 17 arranged to be mounted on the outside of the wall and engageable with the outer end of the probe and a tubular distance piece or pieces 16 positioned coaxially around the probe and held between the adaptor 14 and the bridge member 17 to restrain the probe from outward axial movement in the hole. A flexible tube 8, Fig. 1 (not shown), connects the probe to the pressure gauge and contains a pressure relief valve for bleeding air from the system before the start of a test. At the conclusion of the test the gas in the system is removed by opening this relief valve.
