Abstract

881,937. Suction cleaners. HOOVER Ltd. Sept. 15, 1959 [Sept. 29, 1958(3)], No.31432/59. Class 8(1). A motor-fan suction cleaner 12, Fig. 2, of the cavity type is controlled by the operator through a switch control 133 mounted on the suction hose handpiece 81, Fig. 5, which when moved to the on-position completes a low voltage circuit containing the secondary of a transformer 37 and the energising coil 75 of a relay 42, closing the relay contacts 70, thus completing the circuit of the motor 27. The motor driving the fan 24 has bolted to it the transformer-relay unit 35, which unit and the motor carrying the only high voltage connections in the cleaner are supported between resilient mountings 29, 31 in the lower hemispherical casing 10, divided from the upper casing 13 by a bulkhead 22, hinged at 14 and held closed by a latch ; the joint between the two halves being protected by an annular bumper 17. The upper compartment is readily accessible to the user for purposes of cleaning the filter 21 and has a secondary fine filter 26 mounted on an open mesh 25 over the fan ports 23 in the bulkhead 22. The section hose 18 has an elbow 80 with spring contacts 87 connecting with current carrying members carried down said hose within the corrugated tube 82 to a terminal block 103 and thence by wires to the switch housing 109 containing switch control 133 the wires being insulated from the tube and user by an insulating layer and the polyvinyl covering 108 respectively. The suction cleaner has a handle 16, on the casing 13 and is supported on an annular base 11 into which the fan exhausts through ports 33 to provide a cushioning effect in the chamber 34 formed between said base and the floor on which it stands. The suction hose may be cleaned by inserting the elbow 80 in the aperture 33 and pivoting the switch ring lever 150 about the bolt 149, mounted on the suction inlet, to energise the low voltage circuit and, in turn, the motor circuit ; said switch ring forming the suction inlet until moved back to its off position. By swinging-up casing 13 and tilting the bulkhead 22 against it, conductors 72, 74 and conductors 62, 63 may be pulled away from the terminals 56, 49 and 53 allowing the motor-fan unit to be lifted out of the lower section. Specification 844,413 is referred to.
