Abstract

Unsaturated compounds are polymerized in the presence of an alkyl-substituted boron compound at from -120 DEG C. to room temperature, the unsaturated compound containing substituents having an electronegativity of at least that of the hydrogen atom contained in ethylene and the boron compound having the formula:- <FORM:0881757/IV (a)/1> where X is R2, OR2, <FORM:0881757/IV (a)/2> or halogen and R, R1, R2 and R3 are monovalent hydrocarbon radicals. Specified monomers are ethylene, acrylic, haloacrylic and methacrylic acids, esters, nitriles and amides, vinyl and vinylidene halides, haloethylenes, vinyl carboxylates, N-vinyl imides, N-vinyl lactams, vinyl aryls, vinyl methyl ketone, vinyl pyridine, methyl vinyl sulphone, 2-chlorobutadiene, 2-fluorobutadiene, 2-phenoxybutadiene, methacrylic anhydride, mono- and polyethylene glycol di or higher acrylates and methacrylates, divinyl succinate, divinyl adipate and divinyl benzene. Specified boron compounds are tributyl, triethyl, trimethyl, tri-t-butyl, tricyclohexyl, triisobutyl and tribenzyl borons, dibutyl boron bromide, di-n-butyl boron chloride, dicyclohexyl boron chloride, di-n-butyl boronous anhydride and n-butyl di-n-butyl boronite. The polymerization may take place with or without a diluent, or in water in the presence of suspending agents, e.g. dioctyl sodium sulphosuccinate. Specified diluents are hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, ethers, nitriles, amides, alkyl or aryl halides and esters. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 820,675.
