Abstract
881,169. Reinforced concrete. WAREN, F. A. O., and BROWNETT, A. Oct. 6, 1959 [Oct. 16, 1958], No. 33071/58. Class 20(4) A spacer for locating a reinforcing rod in shuttering comprises a rigid body of concrete &c. provided with a notch to receive the reinforcing rod and a separately formed spring element attached thereto which acts as a detent to permit the rod to pass into the notch but which springs back behind the rod to lock the latter in the bottom of the notch. In the embodiment of Fig. 2, a U-shaped spring element 14 resiliently retained in the notch 13 of the body 12, is provided with re-entrant leg portions 20, 21 which yield resiliently to allow entry of the rod 10 into the notch and then spring back to retain the rod, In a similar construction, Fig. 8 (not shown) a U-shaped spring element having re-entrant leg portions has flanges on the legs which engage the end faces of the body to locate the spring element, and in a further embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown) a U-shaped spring element having re-entrant leg portions is moulded into the concrete body 12. In the embodiment of Fig. 6 two separate spring elements 14a, 14b are embedded in the body 12, whilst in the modification of Fig. 7, a spring element providing only one detent blade 30 is received in a triangular recess 28 near the inner end of the notch 13.
