Abstract

880,877. Transformers. HIGH VOLTAGE ENGINEERING CORPORATION. March 5, 1958 [March 22, 1957], No. 7048/58. Classes 35 and 38 (2). A transformer or generator suitable for supplying a charged-particle accelerator comprises a central column of wound or other laminated magnetic material subdivided by insulation 15 into elements 14, a high-voltage terminal 7 and lining 13 on the inner surface of an earthed tank 9. Terminal 7 is supported on a cylinder 8 of equipotential rings, and energizes acceleration tube 10 formed by thin conductive mutually insulated discs 19 with potentials controlled e.g. by resistors and corona gaps. Tank 9 may be filled with a gas such as sulphur hexafluoride under pressure. The varying magnetic field in the core is produced either by primary winding 32 or rotating poles 37, Fig. 13, and terminal 7 is raised to a high voltage by e.m.f. induced in coil pairs 11, 12 connected in series between the lower earthed end of the core and terminal 7. Each coil pair is connected directly or through a resistor to the core section it surrounds and to a conductive case 17 in which it is enclosed. The gap 16 between terminal 7 and magnetic lining 13 is made broad and short, and the insulation 15 is thin. The latter may be subdivided, and of thin metallized plastic film, thickened at the edges (Figs. 7, 8, not shown), or it may be of gas between corrugated surfaces (Fig. 10, not shown), or between staggered rows of magnetic bars (Fig. 11, not shown). The core parts may be broader at the gaps (Fig. 12, not shown). The output may be rectified by at least one rectifier per coil mounted on insulating shaft 31. The column may be built of thin discs, Fig. 15, comprising central magnetic material 38 surrounded by a ring 39 metallized on the upper surface, and mounted on insulating layer 40 metallized on both surfaces, and including coil 43. The output of each disc may be rectified at 46. In a modification the high-voltage terminal may be in the centre of the column (Fig. 16, not shown). A three-phase modification is described and some winding turns may link with part only of the magnetic circuit (Figs. 18, 19, not shown). The D.C. output may be transmitted to distant points where it may supply acceleration tubes (Figs. 20, 22, not shown) or inverters. An inverter comprising six ignitrons and a threephase transformer including subdivided magnetic cores may be connected across each pair of electrodes of a number of pairs across which the D.C. voltage is divided (Fig. 22, not shown).
