Abstract
880,675. Refrigerators. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. March 23, 1960 [April 6, 1959], No. 10265/60. Class 29. In a refrigerator the food storage compartment 20 of which is refrigerated by a closed air stream forced over an evaporator disposed outside the compartment, the stream is divided into major and minor sections the former passing through the compartment and the latter being directed into the compartment to cool a meat-storage drawer to a temperature lower than that of the compartment. An evaporator plate 42 is located in an air channel 40 in the rear wall of the compartment 20 and is divided into major and minor vertical parts 84, 86 by a transverse wall 88, 90. A fan 68 withdraws air from beneath a shelf 26 and forces it up through channel part 84, the bulk of it re-entering the top of compartment 20 through aperture 25. A minor part is, however, diverted by wall 127 to flow downwards throughchannel part 86 for further cooling and is directed into the compartment below the shelf 26 through aperture 129. Beneath the shelf are mounted an egg-rack 30, a vegetable drawer 34, and a meat drawer 38 carried on rails 36 beneath the shelf. The drawer is covered by a metal plate 135 and a depending flange 147 on the shelf divides the space between the plate 135 and the shelf into side by side channels communicating at the front. The aperture 129 discharges air into the left-hand channel through which it flows forwards and then rearwards through the righthand channel. The air is then discharged at the rear of the drawer and flows over the outer sides and bottom of the drawer to further cool it. The air is caused to flow around the drawer by a partition 179 beneath the shelf. Plate 135 has apertures 157, 159 so that a small amount of cold air can enter the drawer, the latter having holes 155 in its sides to allow through-flow of air. Apertures 157, 159 are controlled by a valve plate 161 pivoted at 163 to plate 135 and having an operating handle part 165. The fan 68 is controlled by a thermal element in compartment 20. The compressor motor and a fan circulating air over another evaporator cooling air for a freezer compartment are controlled by the temperature of evaporator 42.
