Abstract

880,026. Switching-systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Aug. 10, 1959 [Aug. 12, 1958], No. 25889/58. Class 38 (4). [Also in Group XXXVII] In apparatus for controlling the sequential operation of a number of switches 13, each switch is operated by a bi-stable magnetic amplifier 14 having opposed control windings 17, 18, the turns-ratio between the two control windings varying progressively for successive amplifiers so that the number of switches which are operated is a function of the ratio between control signals supplied respectively to the windings 17 and 18. When a control handle 24 is displaced to close a contactor 41, an induction motor 10 starts with the maximum value of resistance 12 in its rotor circuit. A signal dependent upon the speed of the induction motor derived from control generator 22 is fed to the windings 17. The magnitude of the signal applied to the windings 18 is dependent upon the setting of the control handle, so that the number of switches 13 energized is a function of both the slip and of the setting of the control handle. During braking D.C. excitation from rectifier 37, which is fed through the A.C. windings of saturable reactor 35, is applied to the primary windings of the induction motor. The magnitude of this D.C. excitation depends upon the setting of the control handle 24 which also varies the magnitude of the current supplied to the windings 18. This signal has two components, one pre-set in magnitude and the other varying in accordance with the displacement of the control handle from its mid-position. When the dynamic braking contactor is closed, the sliprings of the control generator 22 are supplied from rectifier 31. Amplifiers other than magnetic amplifiers may be used, and the system applied to the control of resistance sections in circuit with the field winding of a D.C. motor. The resistance sections may be fixed resistances between electrodes in an electrolytic tank. The switching arrangement may be used for controlling reactive impedance sections for power factor correction. Specifications 715,340, 717,253 and 738,310 are referred to.
