Abstract

The invention comprises b -dimethylaminoethyl p-alkylamino-benzoates, wherein the alkyl group is an n-amyl, n-hexyl or n-heptyl group and acid addition salts thereof such as the hydrohalides, sulphates, acetates, tartrates, citrates and succinates. It comprises also the preparation of these compounds by (a) esterifying the free acid with dimethylaminoethanol, preferably in the presence of a strong acid; (b) transesterifying a C1-4 alkyl ester of the alkylaminobenzoic acid with dimethylaminoethanol, preferably in the presence of a strong base; (c) reacting a haloethyl p-alkylaminobenzoate with dimethylamine; or (d) alkylating b -dimethylaminoethyl p-aminobenzoate with an aryl, hexyl or heptyl halide. The compounds are used pharmaceutically in the treatment of peptic ulcer or gastritis (see Group VI). p-Alkylaminobenzoic acids such as the p-amylamino- and p-hexylaminocompounds and their esters such as ethyl p-heptylaminobenzoate are made by the action of the alkyl halide on the p-aminobenzoic acid or its ester. Chloroethyl p-alkylaminobenzoates such as the p-amylaminobenzoate are made by the action of ethylene chlorohydrin on the acid. Dimethylaminoethyl p-aminobenzoate is prepared by esterifying the acid with dimethylaminoethanol.ALSO:Pharmaceutical preparations for the treatment of gastritis, peptic ulcer and the like, by oral administration, comprise at least one b -dimethylaminoethyl p - alkylaminobenzoate wherein the alkyl group is an n-amyl, n-hexyl or n-heptyl group or an acid addition salt, such as an hydrohalide, sulphate, acetate, tartrate, citrate or succinate, thereof, in association with a pharmaceutical carrier. The preparations suitably take the form of tablets, pills, powders or syrups.
