Abstract

The invention comprises a -pyridyl-glyoxylic acid and its esters and the preparation of these esters by oxidising esters of a -pyridyl-acetic acid with selenium dioxide; and the process for preparing di-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-a -pyridyl-methane by condensing phenol with an ester of a -pyridyl-glyoxylic acid in the presence of a condensation catalyst and subsequently hydrolysing and decarboxylating the ester of a -pyridyl-di-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-acetic acid formed. Subsequently di-(p-acetoxyphenyl)-a -pyridyl-methane is obtained by acetylating the above hydroxy compound. Examples describe the preparation of a -pyridyl-glyoxylic acid ethyl ester and di-(p-hydroxyphenyl)-a -pyridyl-methane.
