Abstract

878,155. Magnets. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. July 16, 1958 [Sept. 27, 1957], No. 22889/58. Class 35. A magnet, for producing a field which is homogeneous to at least one part in 10<SP>5</SP> per cm. normal to the field, has a one-piece yoke provided with means for applying a bending moment thereto to vary the parallelism of the air gap between pole faces. A yoke 21, carrying poles 2 with substantially parallel faces 10 and provided with energizing windings 3, has a differential adjusting screw-bar 11 with threads of different pitch at each end screwed into opposed ends of the limbs, a ratchet wrench 14 being fitted at the centre to enable the bar to be rotated in either direction and thus bend the yoke limbs, and hence the pole faces, towards or away from each other. Alternatively the yoke may be rectangular, a lever arm being fitted spaced away from and parallel to one limb of the yoke with the differential screw between the lever arm and the yoke (Fig. 1-3, not shown). Adjustment of the pole faces at right-angles to the aforementioned may be obtained by fitting a second lever arm at right-angles to the first together with a second differential screw-bar (Fig. 8 and 9, not shown).
