877,219. Blending powders. COX, R. L. April 14, 1960 [April 29, 1959], No. 14676/59. Class 86 An apparatus for blending granular and pulverulent materials comprises a vertical column divided into three zones 2, 3, 4 by two rows of orifices 14, 17 each surrounded by an annular chamber supplied with pressure gas by pipes 15. The orifices are oppositely directed, see Figs. 2 and 3, along tangents to a circle of diameter about twothirds the diameter of the column. The material to be mixed or blended is induced into a stream of pressure gas and injected tangentially at the top of the column as by the Venturi injector 6; its direction of movement round the column is twice reversed as it falls past the two rows of orifices. The material is collected in a hopper 18, the gas being discharged through the filter 19. In a modification (Fig. 4 not shown), the injecting Venturi is formed as a coaxial extension of the upper end of the mixing column, so that the material is not rotating when it enters the first mixing zone 2; the two rows of orifices are formed as vertical slits in the walls of the column, and are surrounded by a common gas chamber.
