Abstract
Hydrogen cyanide is produced by the interaction of a hydrocarbon, e.g. methane, and ammonia in the presence of a catalyst comprising (a) up to 5% by weight of the total catalyst of one or more of the platinum metals platinum, palladium, iridium, and rhodium, (b) one or more of the elements copper, nickel, aluminium, and silicon in a total amount of up to 100% atom based on the total platinum metal content, and (c) an oxygen, nitrogen, and/or carbon compound of magnesium, calcium, strontium, barium, boron, aluminium, or silicon. The catalyst may be in the form of fine or coarse granules or small rods, and may be employed in a fluidized bed or in a bed moving countercurrently to the interacting gases. According to the example, a catalyst prepared by precipitating alumina from a solution of aluminium sulphate containing platinum and nickel sulphate, the total metal content being 5% and the atomic ratio of platinum to nickel being 4 to 1, was employed at 1150 DEG C. and a throughput of 1 mol. of ammonia and 1 mol. of methane per hour.
