Abstract
874,912. Laying submarine cabtes. TELEGRAPH CONSTRUCTION & MAINTENANCE CO. Ltd. Nov. 28, 1957 [Dec. 3, 1956], No. 36942/56. Class 78 (5). Submarine cable from tank 1 on ship 2 is fed (or braked) on its way to the sea by unit 3 which includes sheaves 19, 17, 12, 18, 20, of which 19, 20 are guide sheaves and 17, 12, 18 are driven (or braked) sheaves which control the progress of the cable. Motor 7 and brakes 9 (hand and hydraulic) are transmitted through gearing 8 to shaft 10, the latter driving sheave 12 directly and also driving sheaves 17, 18 indirectly through drum 36, clutch devices 65, 66 and wheels 13, 14. Clutch device 66 (or 65) (Fig. 4).-The coupling between wheel 14 and drum 11 is by means of tyre 66 which is inflated via duct 28 by compressed air at 29. Valve 24 operated at 31 allows escape of air to vary the coupling factor and therefore the relative driving or braking power of the three driven sheaves. Sheave elevation 15 (Fig. 2).--Sheaves 13, 14 are carried in blocks 35, the blocks being carried by frame 15 and guided by uprights 16 so that operation of jack 36 raises the sheaves 13, 14 to permit the passage of a repeater incorporated in the cable.
