Abstract
874,685. Heating billets or the like electrically. BROWN, BOVERI & CIE A.G. Dec. 3, 1958 [Dec. 19, 1957], No. 38959/58. Class 39(3). A method for the direct electrical resistance heating of rod-shaped bodies, by means of a contact device arranged at each end of the body and having at least one end contact and several side contacts, is characterised in that the voltage of the side contacts is varied with respect to that of the end contacts without interrupting the current supply. The side contacts and the end contacts may be connected to different variable voltages, or the side contacts may be connected to the voltage supply of the end contacts by means of adjustable ohmic resistors or inductive reactive resistors. The voltage of the side contacts relative to each other and to that of the end contacts may be varied. In the embodiment shown, in which a contact device for heating a billet 2 has an end contact 1 and four roller-shaped side contacts 3 having pressure elements 5, the inductance of a lead 6 connecting a contact 3 to the voltage source 7 of the end contact 1 can be varied from a larger value, as in Fig. 1 where the points of contact of the side contact 3 are furthest removed from the end contact 1, to a smaller value as shown in Fig. 2, where the distance between end contact 1 and contacts 3 is a minimum. Specifications 778,977 and 794,227 are referred to.
